WELCOME TO BIG SKY
A TOWN BUILT ON HISTORY
A beautiful place such as Big Sky, Montana, didn't come from the easiest of beginnings. However, I'm sure the collective census will agree that everyone wants to make sure their beloved town stays beautiful. Today, that still rings true and would make good ol' Clovis Deveraux proud to see what it has become since the town created where he served as the first mayor of Big Sky! And no matter where you look, you can see the beauty in the town. From the view of the mountains to every store on Main Street, there's always something to see. If you ask me, someone who was born and raised in Big Sky, I'm always seeing something different even after all these years!
Big Sky was founded in 1893 and has seen its fair share of ups and downs, but mostly the city has done nothing but grow into what it is today: 131 years later. Visitors to Big Sky can enjoy the perks of living in a friendly place with access to a top-notch ski resort for their recreational enjoyment. There are plenty of places to shop and eat as well as an amazing theater! There's truly something to always peak your interest while you visit! Locals have the added bonus of enjoying exceptional schools for their children in Kindergarten through 12th grade! Once they're done with their first 12 years of school, they can move on to the award-winning Big Sky University to further their education while staying close to home!
No matter what it is though, Big Sky has it all that one would need or even possibly want! I know that I don't plan on leaving this beautiful place. As I was born and raised here, I aspire to also make sure my children and their children are also born and raised right here in this beautiful piece of Montana!
[smear:#4f7899]There's something wrong with the world today I don't know what it is Something's wrong with our eyes We're seeing things in a different way And God knows it ain't his It sure ain't no surprise, yeah Living on the edge There's something wrong with the world today The light bulb's getting dim There's meltdown in the sky If you can judge a wise man By the color of his skin Then mister you're a better man than I, oh Living on the edge Tell me what you think about your situation Complication, aggravation Is getting to you, yeah If Chicken Little tells you that the sky is falling Even if it wasn't, would you still come crawling Back again? I bet you would my friend Again, and again, and again, and again, and again Something right with the world today And everybody knows it's wrong But we can tell 'em no or we could let it go But I would rather be a hanging on Living on the edge[/smear:#c18182:0]

I can be quite mysterious. You won't get anything out of me if I don't want it to be out and about. I love anything intriguing and dangerous. I put my life on the line everyday in my line of work, and it's something I get goosebumps doing cause I love it! It takes a bit to anger me, but if you do better be ready for the worst nightmare of your life! Easiest way to anger me is by messing with my family. I can play a part very well when I'm on a job.

The Shoshone can be divided into three different groups: the Northern Shoshone, who were largely concentrated in Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming; the Western Shoshone, who lived primarily in Oregon and Idaho; and the Eastern Shoshone, mainly found in Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana. Each group ranged quite a bit from where they lived, and members of each group passed through Montana in its early history.
The Western and Eastern Shoshone adopted horses early, and utilized them to their fullest. They moved out of the mountains and onto the plains, and adopted many of the traits associated with the Plains Indians, such as hunting buffalo, using tipis, and raiding other tribes for horses. The Northern Shoshone preferred to only use the horse as a draft animal, and they didn’t become fully mounted until the mid-19th century.
Still, the Shoshone’s push east onto the plains didn’t last long, for by 1750 the Blackfeet had arrived, pushed west by the Europeans, and they drove the Shoshone back. The Shoshone were no match for the Blackfeet, for they had no guns to match those the Blackfeet had gotten from the Europeans.
To add insult to injury, a smallpox epidemic struck in both 1781 and 1800. These double intrusions, of Blackfeet and smallpox, reduced the Shoshone numbers so much that by the time Lewis and Clark came through the state, they had no permanent presence, and did little more than scout in single-person or small groups.
The Shoshone, a nomadic people, traveled annually between the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana and the Unita Mountains of northern Utah along the western slopes of the Wind River Range in Wyoming. It is believed that the Shoshone in this area acquired horses in the early 1700’s from their relatives the Comanche giving them somewhat equal footing with their mortal enemies, the Blackfeet. Due to the isolation of their territory, the tribe was spared any contact with the whites until they met Lewis & Clark in 1803. Before the white men reached their homeland in the beautiful Rocky Mountain valleys, the Shoshone people lived for nearly 100 years in a life improved by the horse.
In June of 1868, the government called the Bannock and Shoshone to Fort Bridger to propose a new treaty which would keep both tribes away from the Union Pacific railroad and the Oregon Trail. As the treaty talks continued, Washakie hoped for the land south of Fort Bridger. This area still had game on it and was close to Fort Bridger where Washakie felt secure. He soon realized the land the government had in mind was the Wind River Valley. The Bannock, however, insisted on being given a reservation of their own.
On July 3, 1868 the Wind River Reservation was established, and on July 30, 1869, the Bannock were given their own reservation at Fort Hall. The Fort Bridger Treaty of 1868 turned out to be the last treaty in which the Indians took an active part.
The Big Sky band of Shoshone though did not attend that gathering, and never went to the reservation. They were a small village where their descendants still live in Big Sky River today. They made friends with the White People that came in to settle the land. With the chief's daughter Morning Star joining the first white settler of Big Sky in marriage. That was Clovis Deveraux who adopted a lot of the Shoshone ways, and lived the white man's way building his ranch into the dynasty it is today with his descendants.
Three of the founding families of Big Sky were of Shoshone heritage. The Falcons, Moretti’s, and Thomas’s. Fierce Heart and Morning Dove were a young Shoshone couple that were one of the families. They took on the surname of Thomas. They had twelve children, some of whom moved away, and some who stayed in Big Sky. Fierce Heart and Morning Dove were my great grandparents. Their eldest son was my grandfather.
At one time the Thomas’s owned a lot of acres right outside of Big Sky, but it’s dwindled down over the years as generation after generation moves away. Not ranching as they did all those years ago or farming the land. Our land borders the Deveraux’s which is three times as big as ours. My grandfather made a deal with the Deveraux’s. Their herds were combined, and the agreement is still today. So even though we have cattle they are in with the Deveraux’s cattle. They used some of our land to run the cattle or horses.
I have two mares that are at home in the stables out at the ranch. Starlight and Starbright. They were twins born on the ranch, and I was the one who tamed and trained them making my own. From what I can remember of my mother she loved horses and she was the one who gave me lessons in training and working with horses. I was ten when her and daddy were killed in a freak accident at a traffic stop. How about I begin at the beginning for you though.
Mom moved to Big Sky getting a job at one of the horse ranches here, and somehow ended up meeting daddy. They hit it off, and she got along great with his kids Thorn, Candy, and Kayla from his first marriage. His first wife cheated on him with another woman leaving him. My parents had eleven great years together, and I can't ever remember them ever arguing. Not long after they were married I was conceived, and nine months later came screaming into the world. I was told I had a great set of lungs. The first few months after I was born I was told there were a lot of sleepless nights had by all.
Probably my curiosity which is what drove me to be a wake all the time as my eyes would be taking in everything. Fighting sleep even at a few days old. By the time I was crawling I was into anything and everything. Thorn told me one time that when mom would bring groceries home as well as me. He'd be bringing them in, and I'd have them unloaded where he sat them on the floor. Tearing things open to see what was inside. Cereal was usually one of my trademarks and it would already be scattered all over the kitchen floor.
One time he walked in when I was a toddler just as I picked up a bag of flower and it slipped out of my little hands falling on the floor and exploded turning the kitchen into a winter wonderland. When mom came in hearing my squeals of delight she gaped looking around. Thorn was covered white everywhere as was I. Candy came running after her and laughing she took some pictures of us as well as video that she still loves to harass Thorn with. Oh and my baby sister Abby was still in her carrier that time since mom had set us down and had to run to the bathroom. So she was covered in the white flower too.
When I was four I got my first motorbike. I'd already been checking out my older siblings old mini bikes in the old shed. Dad had taken me for rides on his bike as well as Thorn on his. So I had a pretty good idea of how things worked already in my mind that was always working overtime. I did let dad give me a few instructions, and I was off. Dad yelled after me to stay in sight, so reluctantly I did. Till something caught my eye as usual, and I went to investigate.
It was hours later that they found me pushing the mini bike back with all my strength having run out of gas in it. Before they could even say anything though I was telling them about the deer I had seen and followed. Finding a waterfall and just going on and on. Thorn had shrugged at dad as picked up my motorbike balancing it in front of him on the dirt bike he was riding and headed back to the house. Dad just shook his head at me picking me up and putting me in front of him on the dirt bike he had ridden out to find me, and headed back with me still talking a mile a minute.
A couple of years later I graduated to a dirt bike myself. I was tearing up the Deveraux track in no time at all. A few weeks later getting to start Motocross. I was smart and came up with ways to beat my times and get them trophies. A lot of my friends refused to race me anymore. Finally I started giving out my secrets to a few of them, and in no time they were eating the track up like me. My sister Abby was just getting her first motorbike so I was whispering things into her ear too, and getting myself in trouble. While dad would just groan Thorn was laughing his head off.
When I was in grade school mom started making up escape rooms for me to keep me occupied and not bored and getting into trouble. Those escape rooms moved to the old barn making them more elaborate each time it was changed when I would beat them. Mom got to where she turned it over to others as it was getting to be too much for her. Once in a while we'd go on a road trip to the big city, and while there they would let me take in a few escape rooms. There hasn't been one yet that I can't solve.
Starting junior high was fun. I was starting to like boys by then too. My best friend growing up was Jagger Mikaelson who I liked to drag into getting into trouble with me as well as fun. He was one boy I wasn't looking at not even realizing what was right in front of me. There were ten of us the same age growing up from the club the Wild Wolves that our dad's were in and older brothers. The other eight were Ransym Falcon, Ryot Swanson, Declan Deveraux, Daxton Sackett, Victoria Rosewood, Rocko Moretti and the twins Beau and Anira Vanderson.
My parents were constantly getting calls from their parents about whatever scheme I had come up with to get them into trouble this time. With our dad's friends there was none of them telling their kids they weren't allowed to hang out with me anymore like we heard from other kids. In fact I found out when our antics would get brought up at the clubhouse the dads were usually laughing about it, and making bets about what we would get into next.
It was about a month after I started seventh grade that my world shattered into a million little pieces. I was thirteen and Thorn had just lost his wife not even a few weeks before when she died in childbirth with twins. My mom had been helping him out along with my older sisters Candy and Kayla. What happened next shattered not only my life, but all of ours. A semi coming up on a four way stop light lost control of his rig. My parents were at one of the intersections. My older siblings their mother with her girlfriend. That rig exploded taking out everything in it's vicinity. Including all of our parents.
I was pulled out of school as well as Abby, and taken to Jacob and Candy's house where everyone was gathering. Thorn was the one who told me and Abby that our parents had gone to heaven. He told us there had been an accident and what happened. Abby and I were orphans now, but that wasn't even penetrating my mind as I kept thinking mommy and daddy were gone now. I was never going to see them again. I remember running and ignoring the yells after me.
I ran a few blocks coming up on the park going and sitting on a swing. It was Jagger who came and I broke down to him. He already knew though. His parents had pulled him out of school telling him knowing how close we were. His father was with him so he reported back to my older siblings that I was with Jagger and he was keeping an eye on us. Jagger had ran up and moved right in front of me catching the swing, and looked me in the eyes. Seeing the tears that were streaming down. I had collapsed against him sobbing, and he sat on the ground pulling me into his arms just holding me as I sobbed into him. I'm pretty sure he was crying along with me.
For the next week he was my rock. Always right there ready with a tissue or a hug, or just taking my hand in his lightly squeezing it to remind me that he was there, and wasn't leaving my side. He was exactly what I needed. Time moved on, and I was surprised when he asked me to the Homecoming dance. I wasn't planning on going. I had given up on volleyball with my head not into it after losing my parents. Jagger talked me into going, and I asked Thorn, who had taken me and Abby in to raise us, if I could go. He had smiled at me kissing me on the forehead and said yes. To go and have fun. He even gave me money to get a new outfit to wear to the dance.
Thorn had moved back into the main house on the ranch with his kids. He told Abby and I that he had shared custody of us along with Candy and Kayla, but this was our home and where we would stay. That we could go to either him, Candy, or Kayla if we needed anything at all. That they were there for us.
Time moved on, and I stayed out of trouble for a while. I did go out for basketball, and the rest of the sports that year trying them out. I really wasn't into them though. It wasn't till I hit high school that I stayed out for basketball and softball. I did try cheerleading and didn't mind it. So I did those sports and cheerleading for four years. Jagger and I were an item back in junior high and still going. My eyes had opened up after my parents dying seeing what was right in front of me. Jagger who had been my rock, my best friend, and the one who I had needed not even knowing it. I didn't lose my virginity to him till junior prom believe it or not. Once it was out of the way we were like Energizer Bunnies.
Escape rooms were still going on in the barn. The Wild Wolves well the older generation was still having fun coming up with them for me. Sometimes my friends would come out and go through them with me. It was a lot more fun with the group of friends that I had, but I still went through them time and time again on my own. Improving my skills and time in solving them. I was still doing motocross too, but it had lost some of it's luster with dad there not cheering us on anymore. Still I felt like he was there with me flying over the track so I kept on with it.
After I graduated I went to the University majoring in criminal justice wanting to solve things. Even did the sorority thing finding I liked it. Graduated top of my class much to my families surprise as I had my days where I strayed and my grades were iffy. Still getting into trouble among other things. Once graduated I got me an office and opened up a Private Investigating practice and did some bounty hunting too. Thorn was not happy with me at all, but I was an adult so he let me be.
I even got me an apartment moving Jagger in with me so we had our own place. Though the neighbors started to complain about the noise through the thin walls so we ended up getting kicked out. We got a house then with neighbors quite a ways away and made sure the walls were soundproofed. I also opened another business that I hired others to do. It was escape rooms. Ones that I got to solve first, and they actually became a big hit in Big Sky so I wasn't hurting for money. Not that I ever was in the first place. I did come from one of the founding families of Big Sky.
Some of the cases I have gotten are solved within no time at all. Others carry out a little longer, but none of them have been the breath taking ones that I was wanting when opening the business. One just came across my desk though, and I'm more than intrigued so have been looking into it. There's rumors of the Russian mob being right here in our backyards so it's definitely intriguing and I'm definitely wanting to get more involved in this one. Not even thinking about how dangerous it could get!

Rayne sat away from the others somewhat. As it seemed like everyone was paired off but for him. Or they were with their friends. They’d been back from Sturgis for only a few days, and his dad, Rowdy, and Cain were throwing a bash at their place to try and take off some of the stress from what the trip had been. The Oklahoma boys and his dad, and Cain were taking turns getting up on the stage and singing. Oh and even Clyde had gotten up and sang. Their kids called out songs for them to sing, and they’d pick one from one of them. Of course his dad hadn’t asked him. It was mainly his baby brothers and once in a while Rafe or Ryder would yell out one.
Sturgis hadn’t really been any fun and he and his brothers had never gotten that tattoo that he designed. With all hell breaking loose everyone was on high alert the next week so his father and brothers had forgotten about it. He’d slept off and on that next week after what had happened to him. At least the stitches had gotten taken out finally so he didn’t have that discomfort. Though it still aches some, and Stephanie had said it probably would for some time as hard as he had been hit. It itched and bothered him, but he refrained from messing with it not wanting to get it infected as it was healing. The bruises were still there, but not as bad as they had been.
His dad’s attention today was either on Rosanna or his baby brothers most of the time. Feeling tired and left out he got up to head inside to his room. Rafe and Ryder’s attention was on their new found girlfriends. His gaze fell on Athena then who was talking to some of the other kids in the Jr Club, and there were a couple of guys that she was laughing and having fun with. He felt a pang in his heart, and weaved in and out of people to head inside. A stray tear ran down his cheek as he got inside, and he quickly brushed it away. He hissed in his breath at the pain when he had forgotten a moment about his wound. With a deep breath he headed up the stairs when he came up on them.
It wasn’t that much of a walk down the hallway to his room. The pounding of the music and the roar of the crowd outside was inside the house too, and it was giving him a headache. So all he wanted to do was lay down and take a nap. Opening his door a sound caught his attention. Looking up he gasped as there were a couple of guys in the room with their girls having fun on his bed as well as Simon’s bed. He gaped in shock for a few moments, before turning bright red not knowing what to do. He jumped when one of them yelled at him to get out. Quickly he ducked out his head pounding even more and realized then that he wasn’t alone upstairs as he saw others in the hallways too.
Looking up and down the hallways he noticed people going in and out of the theater rooms too. Walking down to his dad’s room he thought he might find some relief in there, but his dad must have locked his door. He tried Rowdy’s and Cain’s finding both of them locked. There was nowhere to go he realized, and he headed back down stairs trying not to cry. That wouldn’t look good in front of the sons around. There was a lot that he had no idea who they were. Including the ones that had been in his room having fun. Feeling lost and really left out he turned at the stairs and a drunk son knocked into him knocking him down. He saw stars when his head hit the corner of a baseboard. Laughter was heard, and then they ignored him. Sitting up he held his hand to his head, and when he pulled away there was blood on his head.
He cringed as his head was killing him even more now. Pulling himself up he hears something crash and shatter somewhere. His vision was a little blurry now, and he felt the blood trickling down his forehead. There had to be somewhere that he could go, and he thought of the garage. Making his way down that way he put the code into the door knowing it had been locked up for the party. His dad was taking any chances with his panhead with someone messing with it. Once the door shut behind him the sound was suddenly gone as the garage seemed to be soundproof. His ears were ringing though from the never ending sound from before.
With an unsteady breath he made his way over to his bike not even fighting the tears now. Sitting on it he laid his head down against the cool gas tank and the sobs came unable to stop them. He wasn’t feeling good at all, and when he lifted his head a while later there was a lot of blood on his bike. Had to be from where he had hit his head. A ride might help him feel better was his thoughts, and he got off pushing his bike out a side door, and around some bikes getting on his bike after making sure the garage was locked back up. If it wasn’t his dad, Rowdy, and Cain not to mention the others with bikes in there would kill him.
Starting his bike he rode down the driveway with the guards not even looking twice at him as there were sons and jr club members coming right and left. Tears were still streaming down his cheeks and there was still blood trickling down so his vision was still a bit blurred. Right now he didn’t care, he just had to get away, and hopefully clear his head. His dad and brothers as well as the others would probably never even notice he was gone. They were having too much fun. A while later he realized that the ride wasn’t helping, and he stopped not even knowing where he was. He hadn’t been this way yet. Only the other direction into town. The throbbing in his head was even worse, and all he wanted was his dad right now.
Turning his bike around he tried to wipe the tears away and the blood, but it wasn’t helping much. With a deep breath he headed back. With his vision obscured, he didn’t see the cloud of dust coming down a dirt road not far away. When he turned on the next road thinking he was going in the right direction the car came out of nowhere. Unable to stop he ran right into it, and he was suddenly flying through the air. The impact of hitting the road knocked him out.
